At the end of 2019, SARS-CoV-2, a variant of the corona virus, was first detected in China. The virus, which received its Latin name "Corona" due to its crown-shaped appearance, was already known as SARS-CoV-1 since it was probably transmitted from bats to humans in 2002/2003. Corona viruses are widespread among mammals and birds. In humans, they cause colds, which can sometimes cause severe respiratory diseases with fatal outcomes. The viral disease quickly turned into a global pandemic in just a few weeks at the beginning of 2020. Shortly before the first lockdown in March 2020, the artist Hans Angerer, who grew up in Murnau, dealt with the virus threat from the air, through droplets or aerosols from the respiratory tract. To do this, he printed simple medical masks, the sight and use of which became ubiquitous in everyday life all over the world in the years that followed, with depictions of dead birds. Angerer was already certain at the beginning of the pandemic that the respiratory mask would become a sought-after and often sold-out commodity. The fact that the trade in masks, as became public in 2021, triggered numerous so-called mask scandals, which also caused the individual price of the mask to rise exorbitantly, thus making it truly the "most expensive paper", gives the work an almost prophetic aspect.
