This dome model is the only known dome model in Germany that was made for the approval of a painterly design. However, models made to test static requirements are common. The painter Waldemar Kolmsperger the Elder (1852–1943) presented his model to the Murnau magistrate in 1893. The theme of the dome painting is "The Last Judgement". The 1:10 model, which measures 184 cm in diameter, has a vertex height of 50 cm and weighs 16.3 kg, was discovered in the church's attic in August 2009 in preparation for the planned renovation of St. Nicholas Church. Thanks to fortunate climatic circumstances, the model was in good condition. It only had a slightly larger dent and was heavily soiled. Between 2013 and 2014 it was expertly restored at the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation in Munich. After the church was completed, the decoration of the interior of St. Nicholas Church was initially abandoned due to a lack of money. The design by the Murnau painter Johann Michael Wittmer (1802–1880), who had planned to use “Christ in the middle of the choirs of saints” as the motif, was not taken into account. The dome was painted white and given a stucco rosette at the apex. It was not until 1893 that the Munich painter and academy professor Waldemar Kolmsperger the Elder was commissioned to paint the dome in the neo-baroque style. The original church dome has a diameter of 18.6 m and a peak height of 5 m. The painted area measures approx. 350 m². The painting was completed in 1895 and can be viewed opposite the museum in St. Nicholas Church
